The uplifting melody of the Hapan News Network begins, accompanied by shifting images of worlds from all the six regions of the Hapes Cluster. As the introduction concludes, Anacia Chalcedon appears on screen in front of the familiar panoramic backdrop of Chume’Dan. The news anchorwoman smiles before she begins to speak.
“Good evening, Hapes. I am Anacia Chalcedon, bringing you the latest news from the Hapes Consortium.
Lorell Hall announced numerous important changes today, the most important of which was the abolishment of the Lord Regency of Locke Firecam. Firecam was appointed as the Consortium’s Lord Regent late last year in the absence of then-King James and Crown Prince Tylger.
The Lord Regency was an office originally mandated for the benefit of Tarix Jaak, a Falleen whose race barred him from being granted the title of Crown Prince. It was later adapted to function as the official second in command of the Hapes Consortium in the absence of the King and any designated Crown Prince, with the purpose of handling the day-to-day administration of the government. Tarix Firecam became the third Lord Regent appointed in the duration of King James’ reign and continued on serving in this capacity under the reign of King Tylger.
The Fountain Palace released a statement in which it was made clear that the reasoning for the abolishment of the Lord Regency was the absence of active participation in the chambers of Lorell Hall on the part of Tarix Firecam, combined with the new King’s active presence within the Royal Council removing the necessity for a Lord Regent. It was stressed that Tarix Firecam still retains his original lordship, his domain in Sarr and his seat on the Royal Council as advisor. Furthermore, it was announced that the Lord Regency can be resurrected should the Crown deem it necessary, in a similar fashion to that of the post of Prime Minister.
In a relatively unprecedented move, officials of Lorell Hall released a recording from a session of the Royal Council, dating back one week, where further changes to the cabinet were made clear.”
The image shifts to show the interior of the Royal Council chambers. The lavishly decorated hall is filled with government officials sitting behind desks, which are situated in a half-circle facing a central elevated podium with the King’s throne a few steps higher up behind it. The monarch is seen standing at the podium, with his booming voice echoing through the chamber as he addresses the senior members of the Hapan government.
“The absence of active participation in the Royal Council on the part of Tarix Tyrridon and Tarix Threestars in capacities of Fel’da and Fel’ta of External Affairs over the past six months has been of grave concern to Us. We find that sporadic reports and occasional attendance and input on matters both foreign and domestic is not sufficient to warrant retaining these honourable peers in the position of managing the Consortium’s diplomatic service. While the Hapes Consortium remains secluded and isolationist in stance, a functional Ministry of External Affairs is of paramount importance to maintaining tranquil relations with major foreign powers. Furthermore, it is Our belief that the high standards of excellence and devotion to duty applied to individuals serving the government in lower tiers – as well as officers of the Royal Hapan Armed Forces – should also, without question, apply to senior members of government. To accept anything less would be doing a great disservice to the Hapan peoples.
We thank Tarix Tyrridon for taking the time to make an appearance here today and accept his resignation as Fel’da of External Affairs. Due to the absence of Tarix Threestars and for the sake of formalized process, We ask the members of this august body to cast their vote on whether or not to retain him in the capacity he currently serves.”
The image shifts back to Anacia Chalcedon in the studio who smiles as she continues her report.
“The majority of the Royal Council proceeded to vote in favour of the removal of Tarix Threestars as Fel’ta of External Affairs, with one member of the council choosing to abstain. Lorell Hall stresses that the vote pertained only to the office held in the Ministry of External Affairs, and that Tarix Threestars retains his lordship and his dominion of Mathonore.
In the days that followed, members on the Royal Council put numerous names forth as prospective candidates to fill the position of Fel’da of External Affairs. Ultimately the choice fell on then-Line Captain Lionola Ayun, who was chosen by unanimous vote and accepted the position the following day. Line Captain Vetra Kurov will be replacing Ayun in capacity as commanding officer of the 1st Hapan Fleet.
With Fel’da Ayun taking her seat on the Royal Council, it is the first time since the Age of Queen Mothers that more than one woman has served on the government’s senior cabinet concurrently. Political commentators have described this as an anticipated and natural development in the reign of the conservative King, who hails from the Pal’durath lineage. Even so, the Fountain Palace has stated that the choice was only natural due to Ayun’s excellent leadership skills, warm and personal touch, and no-nonsense attitude, that will suit her well in the arena of galactic diplomacy.
On a sadder note the Fel’da of the Interior, Vorn Krace, announced his resignation in the wake of the other changes to the makeup of the Royal Council, reportedly to take a step back and devote more time to his personal life. Leaving behind a legacy of structural reform within the ministry, Krace takes the position of Fel’ta within the same department, swapping positions with his former deputy: Andrew Starfyre. The son of the late Phoenix King, the new Fel’da of the Interior is a veteran of the Hapan political circles and a conservative heavyweight. He previously served the Royal Council as Fel’da of External Affairs between 4030 and 4032 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jaak. In the five years since, Starfyre did a stint in the Royal Hapan Armed Forces before making an anticipated return to the realm of politics at the onset of the new King’s reign earlier this year.
